Josephine County Sheriff's Mounted Posse

 Drill 2009

The Josephine County Sheriff's mounted Posse is a non-profit organization with a constitution and by-laws. Each member is a duly sworn Deputy Sheriff of the County of Josephine.

The Josephine county Sheriff's mounted Posse was formed by Sheriff Lloyd Lewis in the fall of 1946 for the purpose of county disaster and emergency services. In addition, members assist in the search for missing persons, stimulate horsemanship and good fellowship, and perpetuate the customs, traditions, and pageantry of the early days of the State of Oregon.

Annual activities include a State Convention in February, a Search and Rescue Symposium in May, a State Pistol Shoot in June, a State Trail Ride in July, assist at fair in August, and participate in Shodeo in September which is competition between State Posses. Events at shodeo include games, performance classes, trail classes, drill team competition, and matched pairs. Also, the Posse sponsors a series of horse shows in January, February and March.

Monthly activities consist of an organization meeting the first Wednesday of each month, and ride nights are held all other Wednesdays starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. Wednesday ride nights include improving horsemanship, showmanship, gaming events and drill practice. Parades and monthly trail rides are scheduled when possible.

Persons 21 years of age or over interested in becoming a member of the Josephine County Sheriff's Mounted Posse may contact any active member of the Posse for further information.
